Saying No to GMOs

As you probably know, Prop 37— the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act— didn’t pass this month. We still believe that labeling food containing GMOs would be a good idea. And, based on the votes cast in Cali, so do at least 4 million other Americans!

“Because of the prevalence of soy, corn, and sugar in processed foods, more than 30,000 GMO food products sit on US grocery shelves unlabeled,” Alisa Gravitz, the president of Green America, recently noted.

Green America recently created a new campaign called GMO Inside, in hopes of increasing awareness and keeping up the momentum from Prop 37. If you agree with their position, visit their site to join the movement! Before your next trip to the grocery store, also consider checking out the Institute for Responsible Technology’s guide to GMO-free shopping. And don’t forget that our partners at Just Label It offer a quick and easy way for you to contact the FDA about this issue.

I Spy with My Glee-ful Eye…

Spotted in Washington, DC. Any guesses where this Peppermint Glee could be?

It’s in the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian! First level, main hallway, on the way to the Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe.

Pretty neat, huh?

Glee is part of a three-case exhibit entitled “American Indian Foods in the Global Pantry.” The description notes, “The global impact of foods indigenous to the Americas is so immense that we sometimes forget their origins and how they have transformed the world. Today, corn, cassava, potatoes, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes are among the world’s most heavily produced crops. These and other American foods are staples in homes throughout the world and sustain populations worldwide just as they have nourished Native families for millennia.”

Why is Glee Gum in that case? Because it’s made with chicle, the tree sap once chewed by the ancient Maya.

Have you spied Glee anywhere unusual lately? We’d love to see!

Sweet Sale on Natural Candy

As the days grow shorter and the nights colder, there’s no better time to eat something sweet. But wait! What’s really in that lollipop or chocolate bar? Wouldn’t you prefer if it were free from artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, and preservatives? Wouldn’t it taste yummy if it were safer for your tummy?

Enter This comprehensive web-store offers the largest selection of natural and organic candy you can find—and a lot of brands you might have trouble finding. Family-owned and operated, it was founded back in ’07 by two sisters and their mom in the hopes of offering quality sweets made from the best possible ingredients.

“When I was a kid, I wasn’t allowed to eat candy because of the refined sugar and artificial ingredients,” explains founder, CEO, and “big sis” Dawn Van Hee. “We want to make it easy for anyone, whatever their special dietary requirement, to find candy they can eat and feel good about eating.” stocks traditional treats like gummies, chocolate, lollipops, and more. But, as their tagline says, it’s “all the FUN without the FUNNY stuff!” The store specifically caters to customers looking for organic, fair trade, vegan, allergen-friendly, gluten-free, dye-free, Feingold Diet accepted, and kosher products.

“The increasing incidence of conditions like ADHD and autism is also a significant factor,” notes Van Hee. “Many parents find that a diet free of artificial ingredients reduces symptoms, with research suggesting artificial colors and preservatives do indeed increase hyperactivity in children. Sugar always gets blamed for making kids hyper, but the research has never supported that— it’s probably all the artificial colors and flavors that usually go along with sugar that are the real culprits! Since almost all candy contains artificial colors and flavors, parents are searching for alternatives.”

Search no more! This is the place to find ’em. Sweetest of all? All Glee Gum at is 20% OFF, now through September 21st, 2012. Stock up while you can!
