Gleeful Page Turners

Contrary to popular belief, we don’t spend all our time chewing. Sometimes, we read! If you like to curl up with a good book, too, we’ve got a few recommendations for you.

First up is Small Brand America: A Look at 25 Tiny U.S. Brands Succeeding in a World Dominated by Giant Competitors.

Small Brand AmericaSmall Brand America tells the story of 25 companies that have jumped into the competitive world of the grocery industry. Notes author Steve Akley, “The whole time I was researching and writing the book, I kept saying each of the 25 profiles reads like a book within a book. I literally couldn’t wait to write each section after I spoke to the person.”

One of the people he spoke to was none other than Glee Gum’s founder and president, Deborah Schimberg! Yup, Glee Gum is one of the 25 small brands featured. You can find this exciting book in paperback and on Kindle. And, if you Tweet, follow @steveakley for more info!

New this week is another inspiring read: The Shift, by Tori Johnson!

She’s just penned a book about her journey, called The Shift: How I Finally Lost Weight & Discovered a Happier Life.

The Shift is available from AmazonBarnes & Noble, and IndieBound. As an added bonus, Tory included Sugar-Free Lemon-Lime Glee Gum in her Shift Kit — a carefully curated box of products celebrating her book launch. Natural News: Help the Bees, Please!

We’ve all heard the buzz. Bees are in trouble!

To make matters worse, a recent news report from Friends of the Earth revealed that some plants tagged as “bee-friendly” at big home improvement stores & garden centers are, in fact, the opposite. They’re pre-treated with pesticides harmful to bees. So now the poor bees need to beware of our own, supposedly bee-friendly backyards!

Here’s a quick way to take action by asking the big stores to stop selling these dangerous plants and pesticides. You can also learn more from our friends at Veritey and at

Thanks in advance, from all of us here at Glee, for bee-ing involved.

Featured Fans: Spotted in the Big Apple

Ariel C., Hannah H., and Rosie C. work together in sales for a furniture designer. They get their Glee Gum—Spearmint or Peppermint, please— from the corner deli near their Manhattan office.

A few fun facts about these three clever colleagues: one grew up in the Philippines. Another just might be obsessed with Beyoncé and Jay-Z. And the third is rumored to be excellent at riding mechanical bulls (hopefully not while chewing gum).

During a recent office “happy hour,” the creative coworkers took the time to craft a mustachioed, cheetah-printed tribute to Glee…

Gum in School? This Time, It’s Cool.

Our company president Deborah Schimberg recently met with local 7th graders for a discussion of social entrepreneurship— with lots to chew on. The students in Calcutt Middle School’s summer program, “S.E.E. CF Shine,” enjoyed learning about the history of Glee, the harvest of chicle, and the process of making gum. And they got a chance to try the process themselves, with our Make Your Own Chewing Gum Kit.

GleeGum1S.E.E. CF Shine is an authentic partnership between the Central Falls School District, the organization Progreso Latino, teachers, community partners, administrators, and high school students. These groups collaboratively design and deliver a project-based, service-learning program. The program includes students from 5th to 8th grade and runs for 6 weeks, exploring themes of safety, the environment, and entrepreneurship. It’s a great way to make innovative lessons stick (pun intended)!
