Woo-Hoo for UIMQROO!

What is UIMQROO? It stands for the Maya Intercultural University of Quintana Roo, an incredible Mexican school with which our company is now partnering. This public university was started in 2007 and, from the beginning, set out to be innovative. Its mission is to contribute to social and economic development in the region of Quintana Roo and the Yucatan. And it’s doing so by developing a cadre of professionals to bring their cultural heritage to bear and use their training to create positive changes there.

This past May, our company president Deborah Schimberg visited the campus of UIMQROO to guest-lecture a class on social entrepreneurship. She explained how her interest in the sustainable harvest of chicle, the tree sap used to make gum chewy, led to her development of Glee Gum. Many of the students in attendance had family members who harvested chicle. It was a rare and exciting opportunity to close the circle of production from tree to Glee!

UIMQROO is focused on multilingualism, so all students learn in Spanish, Maya, and English. The university is also focused on interculturalism. For example, each summer, students return to their homes to apply their studies to actual problems happening in their respective villages. Students can earn degrees in one of eight areas of study: Agro-ecology, Municipal Management, Language & Culture, Community Health, Alternative Tourism, Intercultural Education & Arts Management, Social Entrepreneurship, and Information and Communication Technology.

At the present time, there are about 550 students at UIMQROO— 97% of whom are on financial aid. Our company, Verve, is proud to contribute to the UIMQROO’s financial aid budget, helping to make it possible for students to attend and thrive in this truly unique school. We’ll keep you updated as we work to find more ways of supporting UIMQROO and its students!

What's the Difference?

Ever wondered what makes Glee Gum so different from mainstream gum?

Our pals at Naturally Savvy created this helpful “alternagraphic” to highlight just that. Check it out!

The Story behind our Kosher Seal

Kosher Pic Kosher foods comply with traditional Jewish dietary laws for preparation and processing, and adhere to strict standards of quality and food safety.

Glee Gum’s kosher certification comes from the International Kosher Council, an Orthodox certification program directed by Rabbi Zev Schwarcz. He recently took the time to tell us why only some gum can bear the seal.

“There are two issues with gum that possibly can cause kosher concerns,” notes Rabbi Schwarcz. “First, the flavors need to come from kosher sources. Also, according to many opinions, even though the gum base is not ingested, it needs to be certified too since it does go into the mouth.”

Rabbi Schwarcz received his Smicha (Rabbinic Ordination) from Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland, OH. A longtime pulpit Rabbi, he also worked for over 20 years in kosher certification before founding the International Kosher Council (IKC), an internationally recognized agency. Whenever his bustling schedule affords him the opportunity to chew gum, Rabbi Schwarcz favors Sugar-Free Wild Watermelon and Classic Triple Berry Glee. He’s a real mensch!

Featured Fan: Spitting Image (Pun Intended)

Featured Fan Jordan Jordan C. attends 3rd grade in Wrentham, MA. She usually gets her Glee Gum from Whole Foods or Healthy Appetites. And she can’t decide which flavor she likes best because, as she says, “I like them all!”

Fun fact about Jordan: she just might have a doppelgänger. Ever seen the 2005 film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”? While Jordan’s love of gum could remind you of Violet Beauregard, the character she most closely resembles is, in fact, Veruca Salt. (In appearance only, of course). Another fun fact about Jordan: “When I’m not chewing gum, I’m a chatterbox!”

“We were very frustrated that almost all gum on the market has aspartame,” Jordan’s mom Bonnie explains. “Glee Gum has made it possible for her to chew gum.”

During assessment testing at school this year, Jordan’s teacher allowed the students to chew mint gum to aid their focus and concentration. Bonnie recalls, “Jordan was all but bouncing off the walls to be able to chew Spearmint Glee in class.”

Jordan and Bonnie, we’re oh so glad you found us! And hey, maybe we should try to make a three-course gum like that one in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”—minus the whole turning-the-chewer-into-a-blueberry part.

Gainfully & Gleefully Employed

Our company president Deborah Schimberg and our newest hire in the sales department, Natalie Brown, spoke on a panel at the Governor’s Workforce Board Annual Meeting earlier this month. They did a great job!

The Governor’s Workforce Board focuses on raising the skill level of the existing and future workforce in Rhode Island, where Glee Gum is based. Through training, adult education, immersion programs, and more, the GWB is working hard to keep RI on the rise. Check ’em out online and on Facebook if you’re interested in getting involved. We’re so glad that we did, and that we got Natalie as a result!

Gleeful Times at Wild Time Comics

Wild Time Comics in Attleboro, MA recently celebrated Free Comic Book Day with a little help from Glee Gum. Judging by the pictures, it was a fine day indeed! You really can’t go wrong when you combine anything “free” with Glee. Here, take a look-see!

Featured Fan: Feeling the Glee in AZ

Meet Ella Rose J., who can climb the monkey bars all by herself. She also enjoys jumping on trampolines. And she has been known to pick up her toys… occasionally. When she’s not busy with all that, you can bet she’s chewing Glee Gum!

Feaured Fan Pic of Ella 2“Mommy gets it for me from the computer,” the four-year-old Arizona resident reports. “I like the taste of it. I love the gum this much.” [Stretches arms out wide].

This pint-sized enthusiast favors our Triple Berry flavor. And she does a great job of spreading the Glee. In a recent birthday card to her mother, her message simply read: “Thank you for finding gum for me.” To which we say, thank YOU, Ella! Oh, and happy birthday to your mom.

If you would like to be considered for our next “Featured Fan” profile—and win a case of Glee Gum for the honor— just send a li’l email introducing yourself to our mascot, gleeguy@gleegum.com. We’re excited to meet you!

Rave Reviews for Radius!

In Glee’s Providence headquarters, we spend a lot of time chewing gum. It’s one of the perks of the job! We also eat big lunches, munch on popcorn during staff meetings, and snack on sweets all afternoon (please feel free to send any spare chocolate our way). But, when the fine folks at RADIUS sent us a selection of toothbrushes to try, we stopped chewing (for a minute). One week of home trials later, the results were in.

RADIUS Fans at Glee“I love my new RADIUS toothbrush!” our sales director Katanya exclaims of the RADIUS Original. “It cleans my teeth and gives me a gum massage all at once. My dentist always told me to brush my teeth and my gums, but I have avoided it for years, either because the toothbrush was too hard and it hurt my gums, or it was too small and took too long. But, now I have no excuse, because a normal two-minute brushing takes care of everything!”

“Because of the size of the toothbrush head, it cleans more of my gums than regular toothbrushes—which is great,” agrees our shipping manager Chelsea. She also likes the texture. “My dentist told me that soft bristles are best for avoiding receding gums.”

Fatsuma in sales adds, “The bristles are very soft and comfortable, unlike many commercial brushes that may feel very abrasive on the gums. It allows me to get a really good cleaning with minimal effort in a reasonable amount of time.” She also finds the larger handle size to be a plus.

Ren in administration tried the Source toothbrush, which features a handle made from a creative combination of bio-plastic and recycled paper. Other materials used in Source handles include recycled wood and old dollar bills (wow!). Ren notes, “I like the fact that even my dental hygiene can be environmentally conscious.”

In addition to new toothbrushes, we had a chance to try RADIUS floss sachets. We all enjoyed their mint and cranberry flavors made with natural xylitol (the same sweetener used in Sugar-Free Glee!), as well as their variety spun from organic silk thread. “I love how they come in little packs with the perfect amount of floss,” says Fatsuma. And Ren describes them as “great for flossing on the go!”

RADIUS even sent us an array of their multi-use suction holders to test. Most of us positioned them in our respective bathrooms to hold our new toothbrushes, but they can be used elsewhere as well. Ren, for example, reports that her holder is “great for hands-free phone calls while multi-tasking.” Fatsuma calls hers “convenient, easy to use, and flexible enough for many different-sized objects.”

Wanna learn more? Check out RADIUS online, or follow the company on Facebook and Twitter. We’re grinning from ear to ear over here! (When we’re not busy chewing, of course).

The Right Direction

No need for a compass, eh, chums?

This Way to Glee

Vote of Confidence

Krista H. from Minnesota is a Glee Gum devotee– and recently took the time to tell us why!

“My son has mild sensory processing disorder,” Krista explains. “This means he does not take in the world with his senses the same way you and I do. Most people think of it as kids who are bothered by socks and tags on their shirt and dislike (or prefer) loud noises. But it is bigger then that. This can happen with all your senses. Chewing helps to calm, organize your thoughts/brain, and focus. And if the gum is flavored with some form of mint, the scent can be calming as well. So we use gum for this… And it works!”

Krista appreciates that Glee is aspartame-free, and adds that she even gives it to her other son to distract him from picking his nose. (Note: this approach just might work on some adults you know, too!)

We were especially impressed by Krista’s creative Glee Gum storage technique (see below). Thanks for sharing, Krista!
