October is known for apple picking, leaf peeping, and trick-or-treating. But did you know it’s also Non-GMO Month?
Genetically engineered (GE) foods, also referred to as genetically modified organisms (GMOs), are those that are altered at the molecular level in ways that could not happen naturally. Yup, we’re talking Franken-fruits.
All 15 countries in the European Union, plus Japan, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia and China require the labeling of genetically engineered foods. But not the USA.
Even more troubling is that, according to the Congressional Research Service, an estimated 60% to 70% of processed foods available in US grocery stores likely contain some GE material. But you’d never know it from looking at the food or the label. As this video shows, we’re all dining in the dark.
But here’s the good news! We can do something about it.
